Matej has a highly diverse résumé. After completing his studies in economics at the University of Maribor, he began his career as a stockbroker at a brokerage house. He subsequently worked as a stockbroker at two other major brokerage houses. Before his role as the Secretary-General of the Slovenian Photovoltaic Industry Association, he was employed at the Ministry of Finance. Prior to his current position as a researcher at the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, he also worked at The Lotus Trust in London, the Universum Institute, and the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning.
The majority of his career transitions have been between finance and roles in the field of renewable energy, with a particular emphasis on photovoltaics.
