Biography

Laura García-Portela is a moral and political philosopher specializing in climate ethics, the philosophy of climate science, and climate law. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research focuses on addressing climate injustices, particularly concerning “loss and damage,” a concept referring to the harms already caused by climate change. She aims to bridge philosophy, climate science, and law to advocate for rectificatory justice, exploring issues like compensation mechanisms, the attribution of climate impacts, and the ethical responsibilities of policymakers and legal practitioners.Laura’s academic background includes a PhD from the interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Climate Change at the University of Graz, Austria. Her dissertation, which won prestigious awards like the Luis Díez del Corral Prize (Spain) and the Roland Atefie Prize (Austria), was later developed into a book, Rectifying Climate Injustice: Reparations for Loss and Damage, which is freely available and published by Routledge. Beyond academia, Laura actively engages in public outreach to promote understanding of climate justice issues.

Motivation

As a dedicated researcher and teacher with a strong academic background in climate justice, I am eager to contribute to the AURORA project and its mission to advance Europe’s transition to a sustainable, citizen-driven energy system. Through my work, I explored the ethical and societal dimensions of environmental policies and the importance of inclusive frameworks in achieving a just transition. This work has shaped my understanding of how climate initiatives must address social inequalities to ensure fair outcomes. AURORA’s emphasis on empowering citizens and communities and fostering inclusivity through co-creation resonates deeply with my academic focus. I believe that citizen engagement and justice-oriented approaches are essential to driving sustainable change. By combining my knowledge of climate justice with AURORA’s innovative tools and methodologies regarding citizen awareness around climate change, I aim to help bridge the gap between policy, technology and the lived experiences of local communities.
