Project AURORA once again attended the European Week of Regions and Cities. Although this year we were not able to run a dedicated session with other Horizon 2020 Citizen Science Projects, Martin Brocklehurst attended the opening session and two major discussion events:

  • The Role of cities in the 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission (100 CNSC); and
  • Participatory Lab – Shaping Europe’s rural future

In the first event Martin was able to make a major intervention promoting the idea of project AURORA and encouraging European city leaders to consider adopting the AURORA Energy tracker app and linked community energy schemes with local Universities.  Discussions took place with Mayor of Madrid Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida Navasqüés on the legal issues preventing the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid from taking part in University based Energy Communities.  As a lawyer he offered his support to seek to find a solution. Kirsten Dunlop Chief Executive of the EIT Climate KIC discussed how a citizen science climate change mitigation project based on the AURORA project could assist cities across Europe to reach their net zero target goal

At the second working session a key issue discussed was how to bring EU’s Long Term Vision for Rural Areas (LTVRA) policies closer to citizens.  During the working session project AURORA was introduced as a way of lowering energy costs for rural communities through community energy schemes, whilst also tackling carbon pollution.  These ideas will be considered as Europe reshapes its policies towards tackling the issues that affect remote rural communities.
