As the AURORA project approaches its conclusion, the Universitets Energifællesskab F.M.B.A. (UEF) is entering a new chapter. Established through AURORA’s demonstration activities at Aarhus University, UEF will continue operating independently, ensuring that the community-driven solar initiative remains active well beyond the project’s official end.
Since its launch, UEF has brought together students, staff, and researchers around a shared vision of producing and using locally generated renewable energy. With over 120 members and a 98 kW rooftop solar installation on Aarhus University’s campus, the cooperative has become a living example of how citizen energy models can thrive in academic environments.
To ensure a smooth transition, the AURORA team has worked closely with UEF’s board and members to put in place the necessary governance, administrative, and technical structures for long-term operation. This includes securing data management and monitoring systems, and setting up clear processes for administration and technical maintenance.
“From the very beginning, our goal wasn’t just to install solar panels but to empower people to take ownership of the energy transition by demonstrating a working model of energy communities in Denmark” says Marta Victoria, project lead of AURORA at Aarhus University and founding member of UEF. “Seeing more members volunteer to join the board at our last general assembly is a clear sign that the community is growing stronger and ready to thrive on its own.”
As UEF moves forward, it will continue to explore opportunities for collaboration, serving as an inspiration for other institutions looking to establish their own energy communities.
