Biography

As a resident of the Forest of Dean, Helen is a committed supporter of Forest Community Energy and excited for the future of the group beyond the AURORA project. Within the Forest Community Energy project to date Helen has organised a visit from Octopus Energy and the Climate Centre, supported a drop-in Solar Information Day, and submitted a case-study to the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. Helen is experienced in digital strategy, working with uncertainty, and creative thinking. She has run unusual and unique projects, both digital and real-world, providing vision and leadership. Helen’s skill set includes lateral thinking, requirement analysis, and the design of creative solutions. Her interests include the creative use of data, collaborative working, and the potential of the internet/social media to effect social change. As a volunteer and freelancer for Good Chance Theatre Helen has worked on projects connecting refugees and local communities using theatre, stories and art. This project required the ability to reconcile differences and encourage diverse groups to work together. Good Chance have recently opened their new play “Kyoto”, about the climate conferences that led to the Kyoto Agreement. The right stories are powerful in creating positive change. Helen is a former Associate Publisher at the London Review of Books and for many years ran a software consultancy. She was also a key volunteer with the UK Scout Association working in roles both locally and internationally.

Motivation

As well as being an advocate for decarbonisation, Helen has a long-term interest in the involvement of local communities in fighting for improvements; her MA research project looked at the fight for rural broadband in Cumbria, UK. The success of Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN) may have some useful pointers for the route to Net Zero for communities.
