Biography

Dorte Riemenschneider, Managing Director of the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA – https://www.ecsa.ngo),has been leading the organization since 2018. Founded in 2014, ECSA aims to mainstream Citizen Science as a research approach and advocate for its potential in research. Riemenschneider played a crucial role in establishing the Citizen Science Global Partnership (http://citizenscienceglobal.org) and supports the development of international citizen science associations. With a focus on citizen participation and democratization during her studies, her Master’s thesis (M.Sc. Research) explored citizen participation in policymaking processes. Before joining ECSA, she served on the boards of various international non-profits. She currently coordinates the Horizon Europe funded project European Citizen Science (https://ecsa.citizen-science.net/2022/09/19/launch-of-the-european-citizen-science-ecs-project), which offers high-quality training, tools, and resources for citizen science to a wide audience.

Motivation

Dorte Riemenschneider is driven by a passion for empowering citizens to actively participate in scientific research. She believes that citizen science democratizes knowledge production, making science more inclusive and impactful. Her motivation stems from a commitment to enhancing public engagement in science, fostering a collaborative environment where diverse perspectives contribute to research outcomes. She aims to bridge the gap between scientists and the public, ensuring that citizen science leads to societal benefits and informed decision-making in policy and practice.
