Seville, June 12, 2025 — The AURORA initiative, led by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) through its Campus Sur Citizen Lab, has received a special mention (accésit) in the Education, Awareness and Disseminationcategory at the prestigious EnerAgen 2025 Awards.
The recognition was granted during the 16th edition of the awards, held at the historic Real Alcázar of Seville and organized by the Andalusian Energy Agency, in collaboration with the national network of regional energy agencies.
🌱 Education Through Participation
AURORA’s Citizen Lab stood out for its innovative and inclusive approach to energy education, engaging a diverse community of university students, faculty, staff, and local residents in collaborative learning and climate action.
The jury highlighted the initiative’s ability to:
- Blend science, creativity, and civic engagement to address energy challenges at the local level.
- Empower citizens, especially youth, through workshops, seminars, and real-life energy transition projects.
- Serve as a replicable model for participatory education in climate and sustainability across other universities and municipalities.

The project has already led to:
- Recognition of ECTS credits for student participation in energy-related community activities.
- Solar energy micro-investments co-designed with local schools and residents.
- Partnerships with the Madrid City Council to promote urban climate resilience and citizen-led innovation.
The Citizen Lab’s activities extend beyond the campus, creating bridges between the university and its surrounding neighborhoods. Children from local schools have joined university students in hands-on learning experiences that demystify clean energy and promote collective responsibility.
