Biography

Ram Dayal Vaishnav is the Education Director at CitizenScience.Asia, where he leads initiatives to expand citizen science across Asia by building strong networks for biodiversity documentation and community engagement. He has successfully coordinated large-scale projects like the Asia Nature Challenge, increasing biodiversity observations across multiple countries, and played a pivotal role in expanding the City Nature Challenge in India to over 200 cities. Ram is also an active contributor to the UNEP World Environment Situation Room, where he develops technology-driven solutions to support global conservation efforts. With a background in IT and data science, Ram has collaborated with various organizations, including WWF-India and the Centre for Wildlife Studies, to implement custom tools and data collection apps that streamline environmental research and analysis. Additionally, he has a wealth of experience in building volunteer communities and has spoken at international conferences, advocating for the use of open-source technologies to address environmental challenges.

Motivation

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and it’s clear that traditional top-down approaches alone are not enough to tackle it effectively. I firmly believe that meaningful climate action must start from the ground up, empowering citizens and communities to drive change. Citizen science provides a unique opportunity for individuals to contribute directly to climate solutions, turning awareness into action. The AURORA project, with its focus on building energy communities and using tools like the AURORA Energy Tracker app, offers a powerful model for how citizens can actively reduce their carbon emissions and support a sustainable energy transition.

Becoming an AURORA Ambassador would allow me to leverage my experience in citizen science and community engagement to further this cause. Through my involvement with CitizenScience.Asia and other regional initiatives, I have successfully engaged diverse communities in collaborative efforts to document biodiversity and promote sustainable practices. AURORA’s mission to create a Europe-wide network of energy communities resonates deeply with my own vision of using technology and collective action to achieve environmental goals. I am excited to champion AURORA’s approach, promote its tools, and help build a vibrant, empowered community of citizen scientists committed to creating a sustainable future for all.
