On November 7th, the ETSISI announced the winners of its Awards for the best Bachelor and Master Thesis with impact from the past academic year in three categories: sustainability, environmental impact, and social impact. Nearly 50 high-quality projects competed across the categories, showcasing the growing role of ICT in addressing the urgent challenges our society faces today.
The Environmental Impact Award, sponsored by AURORA, was granted to Alejandra Barco for her project, “Support for Energy Analysis and Monitoring of Java MVC Applications Using PowerAPI.” This highly relevant work, part of the research led by her advisor, Jenifer Pérez, seeks to raise awareness about energy-efficient software and algorithms. It emphasizes the importance of developing tools that inform companies and users about the energy consumption required to execute different software applications.
Additionally, our coordinator, Ana Belén Cristóbal, presented Sergio Morales’ project, “Web Application for Energy Communities,” for consideration. His work developed a network of IoT devices installed in real households, which feed data into a central server managed by a tentative energy community cooperative. This system allows real-time monitoring of each user’s energy demand, consumption, and export, independently of the type of inverter and without relying on distributors’ meters. By providing a clear picture of energy flows, this tool lays the foundation for intelligent management systems that empower energy communities to optimize hourly distribution percentages, enabling dynamic exchanges and better planning for surplus energy use in the future.
Sergio Morales’ project was one of the three finalists in the Environmental Impact category.
