Universitetets Energifællesskab (UEF), project AURORA’s demonstration at Aarhus University, has been highlighted by REScoop.eu, the European federation of citizen energy cooperatives, in its Success Stories series. The feature celebrates UEF as a pioneering example of how students, researchers, and staff can join forces to create local, community-owned renewable energy solutions within a university setting.

REScoop.eu’s article, “Students invest in the first University Energy Cooperative in Denmark,” showcases how UEF was born out of student engagement and academic research at Aarhus University. Through a cooperative model, members collectively own rooftop solar panels installed on campus buildings. The electricity produced is sold to the university, while members receive a modest annual return — turning climate commitment into concrete local action.

“It’s an honour to see our work recognised at the European level,” says Marta Victoria. We hope this inspires other universities to show that energy communities can thrive in academic environments.”

The article also underlines the challenges UEF overcame: from navigating legal frameworks to ensuring broad participation from students and staff and its ongoing advocacy for policy changes that would allow more universities to join the community energy movement.
