Biography

Professor of Contemporary History on leave of absence at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and currently Research Professor at the Escuela de Estudios Hispanoamericanos/Instituto de Historia del CSIC, in Seville. The focus of his research is on utopias and utopianism with a transdisciplinary approach. In this field, he serves as the coordinator of the Transatlantic Network for the Study of Utopias and the director of the journal Revista de Estudios Utópicos and the Laboratorio de Utopías. He has been principal investigator of the research projects of Equipo HISTOPÍA (currently developing Transatlantic Utopias: Alternative Imaginaries between Spain and America); and has published works such as Diccionario de lugares utópicos (J. Pro, ed., 2022), Intentional Communities: Concrete Utopias in History (J. Pro & E. Di Minico, eds., 2022), Utopias in Latin America: Past and Present (J. Pro, ed., 2018); Hispanic Utopias: A Historical Reader (H. García, J. Pro and E. Gallardo, 2025, currently in press).

Motivation

The eco-social crisis the planet is currently experiencing demands urgent responses in terms of energy use and the structure of the economic system as a whole. It is vital that we implement bold responses inspired by the utopian impulse that has driven innovation and historic change at other times of crisis. I therefore support the AURORA project, its drive for energy transition and its attempt to bring the horizon of a European zero-emission society closer.
