Biography

Karen Soacha is a researcher specializing in citizen science, data governance, and knowledge management in research projects that develop citizen science infrastructures, such as GUARDEN and ECS (Horizon Europe), and previously in Cos4Cloud (Horizon 2020). She is part of the EMBIMOS research group at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), which coordinates the citizen observatory MINKA. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctorate in Information and Knowledge Society at the Open University of Catalonia, focusing her research on knowledge management in citizen observatories. Her interests lie in the intersection of knowledge management, citizen science, and governance. Karen has spent the last 15 years working with environmental and biodiversity information systems in Colombia and Spain, focusing on governance and networks of open data and citizen science data. She is also a member of the management group for the Iberoamerican Participatory Science Network (RICAP).

Motivation

As a researcher in citizen science and knowledge management, I’m excited by the opportunity to contribute to Aurora’s mission of creating a pan-European citizen observatory for climate change. My experience with EU-funded projects and citizen observatories has demonstrated the value of community engagement in environmental monitoring. In this ambassador role, I’m particularly interested in fostering connections between European and Latin American communities working on climate change issues. As a member of the Iberoamerican Participatory Science Network (RICAP), I’m well-positioned to engage Latin American researchers, citizens, and organizations in Aurora’s initiatives. I believe that facilitating knowledge exchange between these regions could enhance the global impact of citizen-driven environmental monitoring, bringing diverse perspectives to address air quality issues and climate change more effectively.
