Biography

Marko Topič received the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1996. Since 2006 he has been with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, as a Full Professor and the Head of the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics. Currently he serves as the Dean of the Faculty. He is also an Affiliate Faculty / Professor at the Colorado State University. Professor Topič has served as the Chairman of the European Technology & Innovation Platform Photovoltaics for four mandates (2014-2022), and has been the Chairman of the Slovenian Photovoltaic Technology Platform since 2006. For his achievements he has been decorated with several awards and recognitions, among them the European award Alexander Becquerel Prize for Outstanging Merits in Photovoltaics in 2022 and the highest national award in science – Zois Award that he received in 2008. He is a Member of the Slovenian Academy of Engineering as well as the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Motivation

There is no progress without passion, neither in science nor in personal life. I am privileged to work in such an exciting and rapidly developing field of science, technology and engineering as photovoltaics is. It makes me happy to contribute to the local and global sustainable development goals. At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering I am surrounded by young talents on BSc, MSc and PhD study level, but with the accelerated deployment of photovoltaics as the cornerstone of energy transition my mission to raise awareness and provide fact-based information among citizens for green deal is even more important.
