No entanto, a universidade tem uma longa tradi\u00e7\u00e3o na investiga\u00e7\u00e3o da energia solar. Por exemplo, em 2008, a Universidade de \u00c9vora criou um dos primeiros programas de licenciatura em Engenharia das Energias Renov\u00e1veis, seguido de um programa de mestrado em Engenharia de Energia Solar e um programa de doutoramento em Mecatr\u00f3nica e Energia. A C\u00e1tedra Energias Renov\u00e1veis criou e desenvolveu uma grande infraestrutura de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o de energia fotovoltaica e energia solar t\u00e9rmica.<\/p><p>A universidade est\u00e1 dividida em dois campus. Um est\u00e1 situado no centro hist\u00f3rico de \u00c9vora e o outro a cerca de 10 quil\u00f3metros. Este segundo campus \u00e9 fornecido de eletricidade por tr\u00eas fornecedores de energia atrav\u00e9s de tr\u00eas postos de transforma\u00e7\u00e3o. O fornecimento tem um desequil\u00edbrio significativo, o que significa que a energia n\u00e3o \u00e9 fornecida onde \u00e9 consumida. Por exemplo, a maior parte dos edif\u00edcios \u00e9 alimentada por um transformador ao qual est\u00e1 ligado apenas um pequeno sistema fotovoltaico. Por outro lado, existe uma central solar t\u00e9rmica, mas o consumo \u00e9 quase nulo. A ideia inicial era criar uma comunidade energ\u00e9tica que distribu\u00edsse melhor as energias renov\u00e1veis pelo campus atrav\u00e9s da rede p\u00fablica e com emiss\u00f5es zero.<\/p><p>A central de solar demonstra\u00e7\u00e3o inicialmente idealizada para o projeto AURORA destinava-se a dar um contributo importante para o balan\u00e7o energ\u00e9tico do campus. Estava prevista uma central fotovoltaica com uma capacidade de 200 KW, o que corresponde a cerca de um quinto da pot\u00eancia m\u00e1xima atualmente necess\u00e1ria no campus. Uma \u00e1rea de 280 hectares est\u00e1 dispon\u00edvel no campus para a constru\u00e7\u00e3o da central fotovoltaica AURORA, e apenas uma fra\u00e7\u00e3o de um hectare \u00e9 necess\u00e1ria para a mesma.<\/p><p>Contudo, devido a constrangimentos legais, o conceito inicial teve de ser alterado e agora a equipa do projeto AURORA em \u00c9vora vai desenvolver uma Comunidade de Energia Renov\u00e1vel (CER) com uma institui\u00e7\u00e3o em \u00c9vora. A instala\u00e7\u00e3o solar a ser instalada na institui\u00e7\u00e3o ser\u00e1 financiada com crowdfunding p\u00fablico para a sua constru\u00e7\u00e3o e implementa\u00e7\u00e3o e a energia solar produzida ir\u00e1 reduzir significativamente a fatura energ\u00e9tica. As poupan\u00e7as ser\u00e3o usadas para pagar aos investidores e para ajudar fam\u00edlias em situa\u00e7\u00e3o de pobreza energ\u00e9tica na cidade.<\/p><p>Quando o AURORA e a sua comunidade de energia estiverem totalmente funcionais, com os primeiros resultados a serem publicados, o demonstrador poder\u00e1 motivar outros cidad\u00e3os a criar e a juntar-se a uma comunidade de energia renov\u00e1vel. Estas comunidades poder\u00e3o ter um grande potencial em zonas remotas com dif\u00edcil acesso \u00e0 rede p\u00fablica, como \u00e9 o caso de alguns locais na regi\u00e3o do
